The Experience

Great Island Puffins - Witless Bay Ecological Reserve

about our puffins

The Witless Bay Ecological Reserve contains four islands – Gull Island, Green Island, Great Island, and Pee Pee Island, that teem with bird life during the seabird breeding season. The reserve contains North America’s largest Atlantic Puffin colony. More than 260,000 pairs of the province’s official bird nest here during the late spring and summer.

Notably, Witless Bay Ecological Reserve also hosts the second-largest (after Baccalieu Island Ecological Reserve) Leach’s Storm-petrel colony in the world-more than 620,000 pairs come here to nest. In addition, Black-legged Kittiwakes and Common Murres appear in the thousands.

about our whales

Newfoundland and Labrador is one of the premier whale watching locations in the world.

Each year, from May – September, the world’s largest population of humpback whales returns to Newfoundland waters. Humpbacks are highly active at the surface, performing aerial behaviors such as breaching and surface slapping with the tail  and flippers.

Different whale species here include pilot whales, fin whales, humpback whales, blue whales, minke whales, and sperm whales.

Catching a single glimpse of these majestic mammals is one you will never forget!  Book your whale watching tour today!

Icebergs Whale Watching Tours near Witless Bay southern shore Newfoundland

about our icebergs

Roughly 90% of icebergs seen off Newfoundland and Labrador come from the glaciers of western Greenland, while the rest come from glaciers in Canada’s Arctic.

Their sheer size will amaze you, and that’s without seeing the ninety-percent still below the surface of the ocean.

Each spring along the eastern coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, it’s prime time for spotting icebergs.
